Our History

Unity of Kanawha Valley has had a presence in Charleston, West Virginia for over 35 years. Thanks to a small group of people who had a vision based on their experience of attending a Unity church, early steps were taken by the founders in 1987 to bring a Unity church to Charleston. With the sponsor and guidance from Unity of Roanoke Valley, Roanoke, Virginia, the plan and vision began to develop.
Ministers and licensed Unity Teachers would speak to the small but growing congregation. Rev. Lois Webb, an experienced interim Unity reverend, was hired to bring stability, experience, leadership and perseverance to the group. Locations of the YWCA then an A-frame church building were called home by the UKV members. During this time Rev. Forest (Woody) Hawley and his family moved to Charleston so he could become UKV’s Minister. His gentle spirit worked spiritual wonders with the members and with the greater community.
In 2004, Rev. Sky Kershner was hired as pastoral leader.
In 2009, Unity of Kanawha Valley moved to its current location of 804 Myrtle Road, in the South Hills area of Charleston.
Many upgraded changes have occurred to the historic 1902 stone structure. Beautifully crafted locally constructed stained glass windows, major remodeling of the sanctuary, a new roof, soffits, and gutters are just a few of the many projects that happened by the love and support from the UKV family and friends.
